On July 27, 2015, Ruth Hopson of Odenton passed away surrounded by her loving family. She was 87. Born in Maryland, Ruth attended Wiley H. Bates High School where she was a member of the basketball team. She worked for Little Hammy Daycare and later as a manager for the Redwood Inn at Fort Meade. She was awarded the Combined Armed Schools award, the Proficiency & Courtesy Service Management award from AAFES, and the Support Program from the Department of Recreation and Parks which was signed by Mayor William Donald Schaefer. Ruth was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Odenton Bible Study Group. She was also a recipient of the Civic Recognition Award, which recognizes act of compassion and kindness. Known as the “Bingo Queen”, Ruth loved to play bingo. She also enjoyed watching Family Feud and her soap operas. An avid local sports fan, Ruth knew a lot about both the Ravens and the Orioles. She loved entertaining and enjoyed being with her family and friends and was a “mom” to so many.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Louis H. Hopson Sr. She is survived by her beloved children: Louis H. Hopson Jr., Ruth A. Hopson Taylor, Renita S. Aponteleon, William J. Hopson, Robert. L. Hopson and Vicky L. Green; her caring uncle Clarence Hopson and his wife Leanne and her sister-in-law Katherine Hopson. She was the cherished grandmother of 17 and the great-grandmother of 4. Ruth was predeceased by her parents Eugene Sr. and Annie Nickens; her brothers Eugene Nickens Jr., Samuel Nickens and Donald and Frankie King.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, August 3rd from 5 to 6 PM with a funeral service to follow at 6 PM. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on September 16th at 11:00 AM.
