Hello, Murty family.
I decided to do a search on my former physics professor and Grambling neighbor, Dr. Murty, and located this obituary. It was my honor to know him, to learn from him, and to engage with him outside of the class room as well. He was such a positive spirit who brought joy, laughter, and intensity to each task he undertook. On behalf of myself, my family (retired professors at Grambling State University), and his former students, I extend condolences to you. I am the better for having known him. May God bless you all.

Dear Kameswari Akkayya, Geeth Babu, and Vijaya,
We are deeply saddened by the passing away of Dr. Narasimha Murthy Garu. He gave us our start in this country and his family took us into their home. We will always be grateful for his guidance and helping hand on all aspects of life. He stood by us in all the early travails that we faced in this country. Apart from the fact that besides his scientific knowledge he had vast knowledge about Hindu scriptures. Such a person of his stature will be missed in all our circles. Our prayers go out to his family - wife Kameswari , son, daughter-in-law, daughter, son-in-law, grandson, siblings and their families who will find this loss a big void in their lives. May God give them all the strength to bear this loss.

No behalf of the entire Pantula family from Vizag, my deepest condolences. I had the pleasure of meeting Uncle as a youngster at school more than 35 years ago in Kasimkota. I took his autograph in which he wrote I would like to see you in US in 15 years, I didn't make it to US but with the inspiration given by him I ended up down under in Australia. Thank you Uncle for your blessings and inspiring words, I will never forget.

My encounters with Dr. A. N. Murty
I'm deeply sadden to hear the passing of Dr. Murty the inevitable departure that we all have to face. When I came to Ruston in 1989 he was a pillar of our Universities and the Indian community. He took no time to accept me and my family as part of his both professional and personally. He had a great professional life, family and spiritual life. He excelled in all areas of life and I'm proud that he was part of my life and I will continue to remember him until the end mine.
He and I collaborated on many grant proposals. He practically trained me to write grants and how to peruse funding agencies. He had so much dedication to the education at undergraduate level at GSU. He single handedly wrote instrumentation proposal that brought millions of dollars to GSU to start Physics and Materials Science research facility at GSU. He has endurance and tenacity to promote his teaching and research in Physics and Catalysis. We wrote so many grant proposal to DOE along with Dr. Naidu and were not successful at the beginning but he kept us encouraged and keep improving until we were able secure DOE funding for about 10 years from what he was the creator of action plan that we pursued.
He has a great wife, a son and a daughter who are well accomplished on their own of course guided by his exemplary life. He lived in Grambling and he was a true Gramblinite in his heart. I still drive in the neighborhood he lived just to see his house where we gathered many times for dinners and pooja. He served as the master of all our religious activities and that alone he took very seriously with so much dedication to his faith. He represented Hinduism in many forums such as Interfaith Symposiums held at our Universities. He had a deep knowledge of Bagavath Geetha, Upanishad and Vadantta. I'm sure knowing his nature, since his retirement he must have dedicated his life to finding a deeper meaning to life, have reached higher understanding of life itself and to bridge his to next life to pursue his journey towards Moksha. I will miss meeting and talking to him again but he has enriched my life by giving me the privilege to be a part of his!!

Dear Aunty, Geetababu, Vijaya, and Akundi family,

We are saddened by Uncle's passing.

His memory will live on in his deeds, including those to me personally. He was instrumental in teaching me the verses from Bhagavad Gita, during our weekly Sunday Hindu School. This school went on for years and was the product of Uncle's dedication to teaching us children the Hindu philosophy and religion.

To this day (it's now 35 years later), I still have the Sunday Hindu School folder with the collection of the verses and prayers. It's not hidden somewhere in a box. It is on my bookshelf in the living room and has already been opened so that my father can teach these to Asha.

With his life, Uncle left something that will continue to live on. Including to those who haven't seen him in years and to the children of those "Ruston children", whom he had never met. Teachers and those who care for us are the ones who make this kind of impact. Uncle was one of those elite people. There is no better a legacy.

To his family: Please know that our thoughts are with you. May he rest in peace and may the wonderful memories you shared with him sustain you.

Madhur, Andrew, and Asha

Sushila and I are very saddened by the awestruck and sudden demise of our beloved community leader, Dr. Narasimha Murty Akundi. He was our great teacher, Geeta Narrator, and a role model for our community children, for whom he conducted Sunday School Classes and taught on Geeta and other Hindu Scriptures, when they were growing up. We adults also enjoyed his teachings and learned from him. Dr. Murty was a very joyful person with hearty laughs. Our family was specially blessed by Dr. Murty's love and affection and he was very gracious to perform the marriages of all our three daughters, Kavita, Sarita, and Anita. Our Ruston community will deeply miss him. May his soul rest in peace.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of our bellowed Dr. Akundi N. Murty, a grate philosopher, Scientist, priest, social guru, mentor to many, and a god figure to me. He treats everyone he is acquainted with as part of his family, shines grace on and takes care of them in all aspects. He treated me as one of his brothers, but for me he is like my father. As a scientist, he is well known as a material scientist and particularly as a leader in magneto-catalysts research with many reputed journal publications those referred by many followers. Under his guidance the physics department at Grambling State University has established sophisticated research facilities those are even used by Louisiana Tech University graduate students to complete their Ph.D. research. As a teacher, he received the highest honor, the best teacher award from the President of the United States of America. As a mentor, he molded several science and technology students at Grambling to be successful in their field by reaching to high positions that brought National recognition to Grambling’s Science and Technology departments. He is the instrumental for my success in obtaining research grants from many federal agencies and guided me to be a good teacher. As a priest, he received great honor from the Hindu community by performing Pooja at every occasion to make our payers heard by the Devine. He has a fascination in trying to unify physics and philosophy by showing similarities with examples from Vedas and Hindu scriptures. It is a great loss and he lives in our heart and spirit forever. Let us pray for his peace in heaven.

Dear Githababu:

We are deeply saddened that your Dad, Dr. A. N. Murty, is not with us anymore. That is a personal loss to you, to your Mom and to your larger family, but his passing away is also an immense loss to us, his colleagues and friends, whose lives he enriched by engaging us in discussions and discourses from Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavad Gita has been “discovered” by many today as the source of peace and tranquility in the West – for example, it was mentioned yesterday on a PBS show how the study of it helped the CEO of Aetna - and Gita may be declared the National Book of India for the unique and eternal wisdom it contains, but in 1970’s only the enlightened souls believed In the values enshrined in it. Dr. A. N. Murty was among them and became a source of enlightenment to us all - adults as well as children. In fact he went much farther. He gave an hour or two every Sunday morning for years to see that the children become aware of the wisdom enshrined in it which would be needed by them later in life. I remember, one of his favorite couplets from Gita was:

karmanyevadhikarasate, ma phalesu kadacana;
ma karma-phala-hetur-bhu, ma te sango’stu akarmani (II-47)

(Thy right is to work only; but never to the fruits thereof. Be thou not the producer of fruits of (thy) actions, neither let thy attachment be to inaction.)

Narasimha Akundi, our friend and brother, lived and preached the teachings of Gita! An act that was classy beyond measure, and would be hard to follow.

I, and your aunty Saroj, will miss him very much.

I am greatly sadden by the news . One of my long time friend has passed away. Akundi was one the founding member of Indian community , in fact he was the first Indian to settle in Ruston. We spent more than 30 years together. Our children grew together, had many Diwali function, participated in cultural activities and had parties together. We all consider all Ruston children as our own kids. As adults we have many memories of gone days, bridge parties on Friday or Saturday nights, dinner parties together, sharing vegetable garden bounties with each other, religious discussions Dr. Murty was indeed a leader in all activities.

We will miss him, his Wit, his company, his knowledge and his laughter will surely be missed. May God rest his soul in peace. May god also give strength and support to Kameshawari, Geet babu and Vijaya during these difficult times.

Dr Murty was an ideal teacher and a spiritual Guru for our community. He initiated us into a study of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. His teachings were passed on to our children who remembered him dearly. His sunday school had always something to look forward to while we were in Grambling, LA. His surprise fete for my 60th birthday was overwhelming. I have been blessed to know Dr. Murty for more than 30 years. His association with me enriched my life in numerous ways – both professionally and spiritually. When I joined Grambling State University he was the first one who involved me in grant-writing and taught me the ropes of that art. I worked with him for more than 10 years on several grants and the associated activities. He, indeed, was a great mentor for me that flourished my academic life in later years. Dr. Murty served Grambling State University for almost 40 years. He secured grants worth millions of dollars for the University from several Federal and State agencies. For those who don’t know, he was one of the members of team which brought the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation program to the state of Louisiana that is known as LAMP. Dr. Murty was largely responsible for Grambling’s national reputation in STEM education. Dr. Murty touched the lives of many students at GSU and helped them in reaching their full potential.
Dr. Murty was composed of several personalities. On one hand, he was a great physicist and a researcher, on the other hand he was an authority on Bhagwat Geeta and other Hindu scriptures. He could easily amalgamate both together and could quote Bhagwat Geeta while giving lectures on physics-topics. Most surprising to me, he was also a great priest who could easily perform a variety of poojas with all associated rituals. As long as he was in Ruston, Ruston families never required a priest from any temple. He will willingly perform poojas at any home on request. My wife Indu and I missed him on several occasions after he left Ruston and whenever we wanted to perform a religious ceremony at home. He would translate the Sanskrit Mantras to English for understanding of our children and could provide a scientific explanation of the rituals. Dr. Murty will always remain in our hearts and we will always be grateful to him for the services he rendered for us and the Ruston Community at large. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the entire Akundi family and pray for the departed soul.

Dr. N. Murty was a very valuable and irreplaceable asset of our lives, part of our extended family, and friendship that we do not comprehend how we will be able to cope up with the loss we all suffer by his demise. He was very truly a very knowledgeable, unselfish, kind, and saint like soul. We will never miss his willingness and pride he took in translating and explaining all the shlokas and procedures to all Indians and non-Indians witnesses during our daughter Daivati's wedding. Such a wonderful personality and simplistic nature we all will miss.

We understand that we can not change what almighty has decided for us but we all can pray for tranquility and peace of his soul and strength for all his family members and friends to withstand this sorrow.
