Matthew Albert Skube passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 after a nearly two-year battle with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma (cancer). He was 17.
Matthew was born on Monday, October 4, 2004 in Columbia, Maryland. Matthew was raised in the Piney Orchard Community of Odenton, Maryland. Matthew attended Piney Orchard Elementary School and started middle school at Arundel Middle. Matthew finished his middle school education at The Auburn School where he earned his 8th grade diploma. Matthew grew in confidence and learning while at Auburn and he made many friends there. While sick, Matthew completed two classes at Arundel High School through Home and Hospital Teaching (HHT) where he received high marks. Matthew played GORC soccer, baseball and basketball while growing up. His favorite sport was basketball. He attended the Naval Academy Basketball Camp over several summers. Matthew loved spending time with his grandparents at “The Beach House” and with family in Virginia.
In his short life, Matthew was an inspiration to many. Matthew endured many intense treatments and he suffered greatly. During this time, Matthew grew very close to Our Lord and Savior. Matthew always put others first. He was an extraordinary human being. He was very brave, giving and caring. He had a strong spirit and a great will to live. Matthew developed many special relationships with the medical staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital, especially with Dr. Llosa, Dr. Duncan and Nurse Edna.
