Lola Evans Obituary

Lola Ann Blasingame Evans, 91, of Silver Spring, Maryland passed away, April 15, 2022. She was born in Griffin, Georgia on September 28, 1930, to the late Mr. Walter and Mrs. Rosa Blasingame.  She was the third of seven children and was always called Ann by family and friends.

Ann grew up in Griffin, Georgia, attended public schools there, and graduated from Vocational High School in 1947.  She received a B.A. degree with honors, from Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia in 1952, a master’s degree (MSLS) in Library Science from Atlanta University in 1959.  She completed a paralegal course with honors from the University of Maryland in 1994.

Ann was an educator in several public school systems and several library systems around the United States over a period of 44 years.  She taught school in Pike County, Georgia, Dothan Alabama, Griffin, Georgia and Wahiawa, Hawaii.  She was a librarian at Atlanta University’s main library for one school year, and was Assistant Head Librarian at the Army’s largest military library at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii, for approximately two years (1965-1967).  Ann began working in the Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Public Libraries in 1969 and started in the Children’s Department.  She remained in this system for a period of 27 years and served as a head of service or head librarian for most of the time she was in the system.  Her work in Montgomery County libraries was, according to Ann, the most rewarding and fulfilling of her career in public education.  She retired December 31, 1996.

With a strong community spirit, Ann served on her local civic association board for many years prior to retirement and she was far more active after retirement.  Her most ambitious project, she conceived and implemented for the community for several years, The Beautification Program, designed to revitalize her aging community.  Ann served on the board of the Colesville, Maryland Meals on Wheels and she served as a volunteer to deliver meals for more than fourteen years.

She is preceded in death by her sisters, Agnes Batey and Betty Blasingame, her brothers Robert Worthy and Walter Blasingame, Jr., nephew Bland Batey  and grandson, Joshua Carson.  She is survived by her sister Susie B. Pearson (John), her brother Frank Blasingame, her sister-in-law Geraldine Blasingame.  Her daughters Lisa Evans and Joyce Carson (Ben) and her grandsons: Christopher Evans, Benjamin Carson, Nathaniel Carson.  Her nieces Rebecca Blasingame-White (Larry), Cynthia Baker (Todd), Daphne Blasingame, Adrienne Jacobs (Clemont) and her nephew, Bob Pearson.  She is also survived by many wonderful great nieces, great nephews and one great-great niece.
