Odenton resident Joe Dimmick died peacefully at home on October 3, 2020 of natural causes at the age of 78.  He had been battling cancer off and on for the last 16 years. Mr. Dimmick was born in Bay City, Michigan to Joseph and Alice Dimmick.

He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1964 with a BS in Electrical Engineering.  After graduation he served aboard the USS Claud Jones and was honorably discharged in April 1965.  After the Navy, he worked as an electrical engineer at The David Taylor Naval Research Center from 1965 to 1979.  He also completed additional Master’s of Electrical Engineering coursework at the University of MD.  He was an inventor that held several patents.

In 1979, he became the founder/owner/President of Leak Detection Services, Inc. a local firm that provides services to foreign and domestic electric power generating companies.  He retired in 2017.

He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), and the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT).

He was an outdoorsman that enjoyed swimming, fishing, canoeing and hunting.  He spent seven years as president of the Naval Academy Aquatic Club and worked for two or three weekends a month as a referee or starter.  He was also an avid reader of both fiction and history who enjoyed traveling and exploring new destinations.  During his lifetime, he had numerous pets and supported many charities to help wildlife preservation.

The day after his graduation from the Naval Academy, he and Carol Jane Durner, of Annapolis, were married.  They had two children who were teenagers when Carol passed away in 1984.  In 1987, he met his second wife Leocadia Ellis at a church meeting and they married in 1988.  She brought three children from a previous marriage into the family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Carol Jane Dimmick and his parents Joseph and Alice Dimmick.

Joe is survived by his wife of 32 years, Leocadia and their children J. Scott Dimmick (Lisa) of Jeffersonville, MD; Tracy L. Willis of Crofton, MD; Ralph F. Ellis III (Melissa) of Severna Park, MD; Jessica L. Ellis Shipley (Richard) of Gambrills, MD; and Glenn A.
