Obituary

John G. Hengen, III, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at his home in Savage, Maryland. He was 89. John was born in Cushing, Oklahoma on June 6, 1933, and was raised in Wichita, Kansas. John is the son of the late John George Hengen, II, and Elizabeth (nee Joullian) Hengen.

John is a graduate of North High School in Wichita, Kansas. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kansas in Lawrence (KU) and a Master of Science from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.  John served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. John had an admirable civil service career of 32 years, working for the Department of Defense as an electrical engineer and senior executive. A particular career highlight was his 1965 tour of duty when he and family spent two years in Cheltenham, England.

John had a passion for Ham Radio and even built a 90-foot radio tower in his backyard. He was a strong supporter of the Maryland FM Association and the K3IVO Free State Amateur Radio Club. He enjoyed classical and instrumental music and played the French Horn and violin. He was a continuous learner, staying abreast of technology by reading trade magazines and journals. John also had a knack for troubleshooting and repairing anything electrical or mechanical. He taught himself each new computer language as it was emerging.

John was a loving and devoted husband and father. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elaine; children Katherine Hengen Green, Carol Kearney (Dean, Sr.), John G. Hengen, IV (Catherine), and Ann Hersey (Thomas); 11 grandchildren and 6 (soon to be 7) great grandchildren. John is also survived by his sister, Charlotte Dulohery (Robert) of Wichita, Kansas, and brother, Phil Hengen (Ruth Piatak) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and their extended families.

John will be laid to rest in the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in a private family ceremony.

If you wish to honor John, in lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice.

We love you, John/Dad/Grandpa/Great Grandpa. You will be forever in our hearts.
