It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hansraj (Hans) Girdharlal Ashar, a beloved father, husband, friend, and community member. He departed from this world on October 6, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.
Hansraj was born on May 29, 2023 in Mota Moda, India and grew up in Mumbai (Bombay). He received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Gujarat University, India and then came to the United States where he received his Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1958. Throughout his life, Hansraj exhibited a remarkable sense of determination and compassion that endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In his professional life, Hansraj spent his early years designing bridges and buildings in the U.S. and Germany but dedicated most of his career to government service as a Structural Engineer for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He displayed unwavering commitment and expertise to his profession. Even after retirement (at the age of 80), he published a book on containment structures of nuclear power plants that is still used at universities around the country.
Hansraj will be remembered for his warm smile and devotion to his family. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we mourn the loss, we also celebrate the profound impact he had on our lives. His memory will forever remain in our hearts, and his legacy will continue to inspire us to live with kindness, integrity, and love.
