Dr. Shanti Ramesh of Ellicott City, Maryland, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2024. Born in Chennai, India, to Leela and Dr. A. Ramdas on July 29, 1957, Shanti was the youngest of five children. She was a distinguished graduate of Madras Medical College as well as an avid sportswoman, having excelled in cricket at the state level.
Shanti married Dr. Ramesh Sabapathi, her partner of 42 years, in 1982. Relocating to Maryland in 1983, she began her career at Saint Agnes Hospital in Catonsville before establishing her own family medicine practice in downtown Baltimore. Known for her gentle approach, Shanti became a cherished figure amongst the underprivileged, dedicating her life to serving those in need. She balanced her demanding career with raising two sons, while still maintaining her commitment to public service. Shanti joyously dedicated her time to volunteering at homeless shelters, aiding seniors, and bettering children’s welfare.
Despite battling a cognitive condition diagnosed in 2015, Shanti’s indomitable spirit never waned. She remained a source of happiness, support, and inspiration to all who knew her. Shanti’s legacy of compassion, laughter, selflessness, and generosity endures, a testament to a life beautifully lived. She will be profoundly missed, yet her example continues to guide those who loved her towards a path of kindness and nobility.
Shanti was preceded in death by her father, Dr. A. Ramdas, and her sister, Shashi Baliga. Shanti is survived by her beloved husband Ramesh, her two adoring sons, Prashant and his wife Alyssa, Praveen and his wife Kelly; her mother, Leela Ramdas; and her siblings, Shakuntala Nayak, Upendra Pai, and Sheela Adige; as well as countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.
