Born on January 1, 1943, in a small village, Saropatti, Bihar (India), Adyanand Singh was a devoted son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was the fourth of five brothers. To his close family and friends, he was known as “Buchan, Nuncha, Singh Sahab and Singh Uncle”  and to the community, on which he had a huge impact, he was known as “Mr. Singh.” He was generous, intelligent, authentic, joyful, humorous, gregarious, a trailblazer, a force of nature, and honest to a fault.

Adyanand Singh came from a humble farming family in rural Bihar. After getting married to Pratima Singh, he completed his master’s in anthropological studies at Ranchi University in India. With just a plane ticket and less than $20 in his pocket, he arrived in Washington, D.C., in 1969. Singh was the true definition of living the American dream as he progressed through hard work and perseverance from his first jobs at Howard University working in the mailroom and at Marriott working as frontline staff to one day becoming a successful business magnate.

Singh was determined to not only provide for his own family but always extended his determination and drive to support anyone in need, which included his extended family, friends, and his community here in the United States, as well as overseas in India. He was a very successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. Singh was a pioneer for the South Asian, Ethiopian, and other immigrant communities where he created opportunities and found solutions. Singh fostered his passion for community and culture through his businesses such as Indian Super Market, Ethiopian Indian Super Market, and International Trade House. His love for connecting immigrant communities to their homeland motivated him to create Amertel Communications. Additionally, he was a passionate real estate investor. Singh and his wife acquired numerous residential and commercial properties and supported future entrepreneurs in the Silver Spring, Maryland area.

Singh’s philanthropic work through his Save Life Foundation supported multiple local and international efforts. He supported any need whether it was contributing to local community hospitals in Maryland, providing disaster relief around the world, building a non-profit hospital for women’s medical care in India, constructing temples, and developing homes for those less fortunate.

Singh leaves behind his beloved wife, Pratima Singh, and four daughters, Chandra Kumar, Anupma Singh, Anjana Singh, and Dr. Rakhi Singh as well as five grandchildren, Pratibha Kumar, Arjun Shivraj Kumar, Milana Singh Alarcon, Lara Marie Alarcon, Riyana Singh Aulakh and sons-in-law, Pramod Kumar, Dr. Anthony James Alarcon, Ramnik Singh Aulakh, and granddaughter-in-law, Mira Nicole Sethi. In partnership with his wife, Pratima, they created a legacy personally and professionally beyond any goal or dreams that they could have imagined. Adyanand Singh’s legacy will continue through the lives that he touched. He was a pillar in his community, and his memories will continue to inspire us. He is a true legend.
