Scott K. Andersen D.V.M.

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and veterinarian Scott Karl Andersen DVM born in Worcester, MA July 4, 1957 passed at home with family in Millersville, MD September 17, 2026.

He started working for Dr. John Hayes at a young age and found his first love, working with medicine and animals. He began his journey into veterinary medicine at the University of Maryland and was later accepted into The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Sold his mustang, bought a Karmann Ghia and a bicycle and headed to the Midwest. Even there as a vet student he would do things to help the community and the animals in their care even if it was against school policy…which involved many visits to the deans office. In 1982, Dr. Scott Andersen, a proud Buckeye, began his amazing career as one of the best veterinarians around, to become a true legend in the field. He returned to Maryland and worked alongside his mentor, Dr. Hayes for many years, eventually buying the hospital formally known as Squire Animal Hospital in Upper Marlboro, MD. He spent many wonderful years there evolving his own career and creating his legacy. He sold Squire in 1997 and went on to build Waugh Chapel Animal Hospital in Gambrills, MD, opening the doors April 8, 2002. There he worked side by side with his wife, two boys and many wonderful people that would soon be known and loved as family. His dream was to always create a community hospital that focused on quality care, understanding, compassion and to truly be there when he was needed, his purpose in life. It was never a job to him, it was his passion. He loved being able to help with their health needs whether it was general wellbeing or complex cases but his true passion was in the surgery room. He had a heart of gold when it came to animals. He never cared about the money, if someone didn’t have it but their animal needed him, he helped many times free of charge. He worried about the veterinary field and where it was going, the loss of veterinarians being Doctors and referring to specialists and being out of reach financially for many. The private practices losing to big corporations. Losing its sense of compassion, community and personal relationships were a big concern for him. Retirement was never in his vocabulary.

He and his wife created a loving and stable home where they raised their children and many rescued animals. Always full of laughter and stories from his farm calls, he loved life and his family deeply. He loved to tell stories of when he was in high school driving his Chinese Red Mustang. How many times he and that car caused trouble, raced someone at Buds Creek or ran from the police. He loved to travel, especially to the beach. He loved being with his family and watching his children grow into the good human beings they have become. He was very proud of them and looking forward to their next chapters in life. He loved cars, he would have been a vintage American muscle car mechanic in another life. He loved collecting…everything. Scott was a true sports fan and enjoyed watching the Capitals, the Redskins, the Terrapins and his Buckeyes. Something he has passed down to his children.

Scott is survived by his wife, Nicole Andersen, and their two children, Ethan Andersen and Aiden Andersen. Also survived by his children Steven (Lauren) Andersen, Kristin (Brian) Hostetler, and Nicole Andersen whom he shared with his first wife, Denise. He leaves behind 5 grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Tina (Bill) Buckel and their children Karla & Derek.

He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure and honor of knowing him. He touched many lives, animal and human, in many ways.

We worked closely with many, which included Senior Dog Sanctuary, Eskie Rescuers United, Anne Arundel Animal Care and Control, Friends of Anne Arundel County Animal Control, SPCA of Annapolis, Heart4Animals, Tasca’s Love Cooperative, and Animal Allies Rescue to name a few.
