Royce D. Hemingway

Royce (Sonny) Hemingway, age 91, passed away in Catonsville, MD on December 20, 2024.

Royce was born on May 3, 1933 in Highgate, Vermont. Son of Russell and Dorris Hemingway, he grew up in Alburg, Vermont, graduated from Swanton High School in 1951 and was drafted into the Army in 1953 during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. After his military service, he continued his studies at the University of Vermont.

He traveled to Maryland in 1959 where he met and married Mary Fry, the mother of his seven children. Royce moved on to a career in the insurance business, working for Southland Life Insurance Co., Mutual of Omaha and others. He remained an insurance agent for many years. He was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. Royce loved to sing and spent several years showcasing his voice with the Sons of Italy Choir.

He is survived by his sister Debra Rice, son Royce Hemingway and wife Danielle, daughter Kristina Hemingway, son Robert Hemingway and wife Tessa, son Raymond Hemingway,

son Rodney Hemingway, son Ryan Hemingway and wife Dreama, son Reid Hemingway and wife Karen, along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his Parents, brother Russell Hemingway, sister Carol Martin and her husband Charlie Martin and brother-in-law Gary Rice.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, January 3, 2024 at Donaldson Funeral Home & Cremtatory, P.A., 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, MD 21113. Shortly after the funeral there will be military honor’s service at 11:30 am, to be held at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, MD 21032 in the chapel.

Following the services, relatives and friends are welcome to join us for a reception at Lures Bar & Grille, 1397 Generals Hwy., Crownsville, MD 21032.
