Royal Demarest Green passed away in Glen Burnie, Maryland on December 2, 2024 at the age of 86. Born in Queens, New York on November 18, 1938 to Clarice Heimbucher and Albert Leslie Green, Royal was the youngest of three children. He attended Georgetown University and Fordham University, before graduating from The New School for Social Research with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963.
After college, Royal enlisted in the United States Army. His military service took him to Vietnam in 1970, where he met his wife, Cuc, in her hometown of Da Nang. Following their marriage in New York City in December 1974, Royal and Cuc lived in Germany (where their son was born), Maryland (where their daughter was born), California, South Korea, and Japan. The family returned to Maryland in 1988 and settled in Severn.
Royal retired from the Army in 1990 as a Chief Warrant Officer Four. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Royal then embarked on a civilian career with the Department of Defense until his retirement in 2005.
Royal was a voracious reader and lover of classical music. He loved cats and enjoyed feeding any neighborhood cats who came by the house. A prolific writer after his retirement, he wrote six books over the course of 15 years. He was contemplating another novel at the time of his passing.
He will be interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, New York.
Royal is survived by his wife, Cuc Green; his son, Miles Green; his daughter, Emily Green Hull, and her husband, Russell Hull; his sister, Elizabeth Green; and his nephew, Edward Green. He was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest sister, Natalie Green.
