Roy Carter of Shrewsbury, PA, formerly of Odenton, MD, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD at the age of 78. Roy was born on August 30, 1934 in Chicago, IL and was the loving son of the late Mattie Carter.
He served in the U.S. Army for twenty-six years. In 1978, while stationed in Ft. Meade, Maryland, he met the woman with whom he'd share the rest of his life - Wilma Wilkins. He retired as a Vietnam War Veteran in 1982 having received many medals, badges and ribbons including a Humanitarian Service Medal. Upon his retirement from military life, Roy began a new career with the U.S. Postal Service as a Mail handler that would last for twenty-five years. During his tenure, he received many Achievement Awards. Roy was blessed with a kind, gentle and caring spirit. In addition to being a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend; he mentored, counseled and provided guidance to many young men. He had a gift for turning "boys to men". He has been referred to as a "true gentleman". To know Roy (also referred to as Carter) was to love him. He was a strong MAN OF VALOR.
Roy is survived by his beloved wife Wilma D. Carter of Shrewsbury, PA; devoted brother, Ray Carter of Chicago, IL; three loving daughters, Sanita Smith of Portsmouth, VA, Sharron Merritt of Glen Burnie, MD and Kia Ultz of Newport, RI and a host of family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, MD 21113 on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8 pm and on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 from 10:30am to 11:30am. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 am in the Donaldson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held at Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville, MD.
