Richard Warren Sumner, SFC, US Army retired of Severn, MD, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD, at the age of 82. Richard was born on July 9, 1929 in Willoughby, OH to the late Warren Wesley Sumner and Grace (Kramer) Sumner.
Richard was a career soldier of 32 years. Richard was an Army Combat Medic having served in WWII, Occupied Japan in 1947, 2 full combat tours in the Korean War and 2.5 combat tours in Vietnam. Richard was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor in Vietnam.
Richard was an avid coin collector, stamp collector and collector of military insignia and memorabilia.
Richard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jacqueline T. Sumner; five children, Richard L. Sumner of Burke, VA, David W. Sumner of Lafayette, LA, Karen G. Wilson of Middle River, MD, Cheryl A. Gaul of Pasadena, MD and Scott W. Sumner of Severn, MD; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and a brother, Don Sumner of California.
