Nancy Snyder
Hutchins
Oct 24, 1936 — Oct 24, 2026
Nancy Lee Hutchins passed away at her home in Crownsville, Maryland, on October 24, 2026, on her 90th birthday. Her daughters and son-in-law were by her side. Nancy was born on October 24, 1936, in Glendale, California, to Walter August and Gladys Myrle Snyder, and the family moved to Maryland when she was a young child. She graduated from Arundel High and attended the University of Maryland, and became a nurse. She and her former husband, John Hutchins, purchased land along the Severn River and built their home in 1961; she has lived in the Arden on the Severn community ever since. When her daughter Lila was born, she decided to go into teaching and taught at Glendale Elementary for over 30 years and retired in 1992. In her later years, she was a member of Anchor Baptist Church, participated in Bible studies at several churches, drove for Meals on Wheels, and loved aqua aerobics. She made many good friends through these activities. She loved caring for animals, including local wildlife such as birds, foxes, raccoons, squirrels, and deer; whatever wandered into the yard was well fed. She adored her beloved dogs, Daisy and Violet, and many others who came before them. She was kind, welcomed everyone, and was a wonderful mother, sister, Nana, aunt, neighbor, and friend. Her granddaughter describes her as a “foundation to the family,” helping so many by offering a place to stay, meals, and support.
Nancy is survived by her siblings, Phyllis Phillips (Walt) and Dale Snyder (Judy); her daughters, Lila Sampson (Michael) and Julie Hutchins (Jeanette); her granddaughter, Carly McGee, the apple of her eye; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Shirley Ballantine (Bill).
Her family will have a private service. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to animal rescue BARCS.org at 2490 Giles Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21225, or by phone at (410) 396-4695.
