Mary Josephine Hicks

With hearts full of gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Josephine Hicks (née Dougherty), affectionately known to many as Mary Jo, on July 22, 2026, at her residence. Born on January 23, 1952, in Baltimore, Mary Jo graced the world with warmth, compassion, and an indomitable spirit that touched all who knew her.

Mary Jo’s life was woven together by her enduring love for her family, deep-rooted faith, and sincere care for others. She shared over five decades of unwavering partnership and affection with her beloved husband, Daniel C. Hicks, building a home filled with laughter, learning, and unconditional love. Their union was blessed with four children: Morgan, Mark, Joseph, Taylor. Each of them carries with them the unique values and tender guidance their mother imparted—her legacy of patience, understanding, and steadfast support.

The joys of Mary Jo’s life grew richer with the arrival of her grandchildren. Hazel Bruneman, Harmonie Logins, Cameron Hicks-Malinowski, Carter Hicks-Malinowski, and Maia Hicks-Blasingame were each beloved and delighted in their grandmother’s gentle affection and stories that will linger in family memory for generations. She also shared a lifelong bond with her dear sister, Mary Catherine Dougherty, and brother, Michael Dougherty, finding strength and comfort in their unbreakable connection.

Throughout the years, she remained a devoted daughter to her late parents, Edward J. Dougherty and Catherine Imelda Dougherty, whose lessons and example shaped the woman she became.

Though we mourn the loss of Mary Jo’s physical presence, her legacy will forever be enshrined in the hearts of those she loved and taught. Her life was a testament to kindness and quiet strength, rooted in loving acts both great and small. Those privileged enough to know her will remember her not only for her wisdom and humor but, most importantly, for her unwavering acceptance and care.

Family and friends are invited to honor Mary Josephine Hicks’s memory at the Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., located at 1411 Annapolis Rd, Odenton, MD 21113, for two visitations on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and again from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A funeral service will be held the following day, Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Parish, 7850 Parkside Blvd, Hanover, MD 21076. Interment will follow to Nichols-Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, Odenton, MD 21113.

In this time of sorrow, we find solace in remembering Mary Jo’s radiant smile and generous heart. As we say goodbye, we hold tight to the precious memories she gifted us—a legacy of unconditional love that will endure for all the days to come.
