Marvin D. Smith, beloved husband of Barbara A. Smith, loving father of Jordan Smith, Lisa Smith, Tracey Cheek, Tuesdi Knight and Misty Crawford passed away at his home in Gambrills, Maryland on Saturday, February 19, 2022. He was 75.
Marvin spent thirty years with Amtrak claims, Marvin has come full circle having chosen to retire in the same small town where he was born and raised, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He was back with his family, and friends he has known all his life and it's a big family. Marvin and his wife Barbara have a son, four daughters and a mess of grandchildren with another expected in July.
After graduating from high school in Waynesboro, Marvin attended Lochhaven University, which is just north of Penn State, earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He also took course work at the university of Virginia's Darden School of Business through Amtrak's executive education program. Marvin spent ten years in insurance claims with Allstate and GEICO before joining Amtrak Claims in February 1977.
He started out as a claims agent with a territory covering the Southeastern United States, from Washington to Miami to New Orleans. He was later promoted to Manager Claims Services, opening and supervising offices in Jacksonville and Miami. He retired as Director Claims and Litigation in May 2007, having spent his entire thirty year career at Corporate Headquarters. Marvin is a past President of the Southeastern Claims Association, was a member of the Association for thirty years and still remained active. He played a major role in planning the General Claims Conferences hosted by Amtrak in Washington, D.C. in 1983 and 2002.
He loved playing granddad, ferrying the kids to football, basketball, hockey and soccer practice. That of course, is when they can get him off the golf course. Marvin lived right across the street from the club house. Life is good, Marvin was well known and has many friends throughout the railroad claims industry. His advice was, don't be afraid of retirement, you'll find plenty to do. In fact he tried to figure out how he ever found time to work.
A private cremation was held. A memorial gathering/service to celebrate Marvin's Life will be held at the Waynesboro Country Club, 11000 Country Club Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268 on Saturday, March 19, 2022 from 2-5 PM.
