Obituary

—————-

Leslie “Les” Russell Ruffner passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born in Brockway, Pennsylvania, he was the beloved son of the late Arden and Frances Ruffner (née Fitzsimmons). In his youth, Les was presented the prestigious God and Country award and earned the distinguished honor of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment that reflected the discipline, curiosity, and dedication that would define his life.

Les proudly served his country in the United States Air Force beginning in 1954, where he also showcased his athletic talent as a pitcher on the Air Force baseball team in Palm Beach, Fl. It was during his early college years that he met the love of his life, Kaye Ruffner (née Edwards). Their story was one of immediate connection—they met in May and were married that August, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 68 years.

A man of remarkable intellect and determination, Les graduated with honors in 1960, completing his bachelor’s degree in just two years. He began his professional career teaching electronics in the Arlington, Virginia public school system before joining Westinghouse in late 1962. There, he initially taught radar fundamentals and steadily rose through the ranks to become an executive manager before his retirement in 1990.

Les’s career and personal life were marked by a passion for travel and discovery. Through his work at Westinghouse in Field Engineering and Support, as well as his own adventures, he visited destinations around the globe, including Japan, Australia, Africa, Germany, England, Singapore, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Copenhagen, Greece, China, and throughout the United States. One of the most memorable chapters of his life was the time he, Kaye and Maureen spent living in Shiraz, Iran, in the late 1970s—an experience that fostered lifelong friendships and lasting memories.

At home, Les was known for his sense of humor, creativity, ingenuity, and love for his family. An avid boater and RV enthusiast, he found joy in exploring both waterways and open roads. He had a natural talent for tinkering and could build and fix nearly anything. Ever curious, he once taught himself to crochet simply by watching a family member—and one Christmas, lovingly gifted each member of his family a handmade afghan. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially during summer gatherings around the family swimming pool.

Les also had a special fondness for animals, particularly Siamese cats, and shared his life with many over the years.

In addition to his beloved wife, Kaye, Les is survived by his loving daughter, Maureen Oberteuffer and her husband, Robert (Rob) Oberteuffer and his cherished grandchildren, Megan E. Oberteuffer, Matthew R. Oberteuffer, Ryan K. Oberteuffer and

Katherine J. Oberteuffer. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Phillip Ruffner and Patricia (Jean) Peterson.
