Laurel Beth Allen, a cherished soul whose life was marked by curiosity, love, and an abiding connection to the natural world, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, in Odenton, Maryland. Born on January 24, 1948, in Pasadena, California,
Laurel’s journey through life was one defined by a passionate spirit and an unwavering appreciation for history, nature, and family. From an early age, Laurel showed a deep inquisitiveness about the world and a shared history that bridged continents and centuries. This passion took root during her studies at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she pursued an art major, enriching her understanding of human culture and expression. Her love for the British Monarchy, a subject she avidly studied, reflected her fascination with the stories and traditions that shape our collective past. Laurel’s adventurous heart led her to travel extensively, embracing the beauty and diversity of the world’s landscapes and cultures. Whether on river cruises through the enchanting waterways of Europe or exploring the vast expanses of the United States, she sought to immerse herself fully in each experience. Yet, amidst her many voyages, it was the quiet moments of bird watching that truly brought her peace and joy
A dedicated steward of the environment, Laurel was deeply conscious of the natural world’s fragile beauty and carried this respect in every corner of her life .In her later years, Laurel found comfort and happiness closer to home, treasuring the daily companionship of her beloved husband of 34 years, Paul Allen. Their shared life was a testament to enduring love and mutual support, a foundation upon which many joyful memories were built. Laurel’s family was the light of her life. She was a devoted daughter to the memory of her late parents, Thomas Blackshear and Rosemary Pedersen. She leaves behind her loving daughter, Carie Howell, and son-in-law Kevin, who carry forward her spirit through their own lives. Her legacy extends warmly to her grandchildren—Vivyan, Olivya, Liam, and Everett—who knew her as a source of wisdom and kindness. Laurel’s heart embraced her siblings as well, including her brother Christian Blackshear and sisters Natalie Nehman and Ellen Blackshear, who stood by her throughout life’s journeys. Additionally, her spirit lived on in the close bonds she shared with her four nephews: James Nehman (Stephanie), Jeffrey Nehman (Diane), Joe Nehman (Karan), and Jon Nehman. Laurel Beth Allen’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of love, knowledge, and reverence for the world’s wonders.
As we remember her, we hold close the memory of a woman who embodied grace, curiosity, and a deep care for those around her. Her presence enriched all who knew her, and though she has left this world, the echoes of her laughter and the warmth of her heart continue to inspire and comfort us. May Laurel find eternal peace among the birds and landscapes she so dearly loved, as we carry forward her legacy with gratitude and affection.
