Dr. Larry Clare

F. Lawrence “Larry” Clare, M.D., M.P.H., passed away on February 24, 2024, at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland. As a longtime Public Health Service Officer, Dr. Clare helped draw attention to issues related to graduate medical education. He was born in Twin Falls, ID on May 17, 1935. Following high school in Boise, ID and completing his undergraduate degree at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, Dr. Clare graduated from Harvard and began his career with the US Department of Health and Human Services, retiring in the early 2000s.

Early in his career, in the 1970s, Dr. Clare led the New York City office of the Professional Standards Review Organizations. This led to work in Baltimore with the Health Care Financing Administration, now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. In the 1980s and 1990s, as senior medical official in the Department of Health and Human Services in the Washington, DC area, Dr. Clare staffed the Council on Graduate Medical Education. This program helped raise issues related to improving access to health care through reports on physician workforce and medical education, workforce funding recommendations for department of Health and Human Services programs, and patient care supply requirements. He was also an active participant in the George Washington University Health Policy Forum on topics related to financing medical education.

After Dr. Clare retired in early 2000, he continued to pursue his avid interests in classical music and nature photography. As a classical music enthusiast, he both loved music appreciation and composition and shared his knowledge willingly with his friends and colleagues. He also arranged concert outings with dinner to classical music events with his friends. In his spare time, he also enjoyed photography, and memorializing his many trips to his beloved “West.”

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on March 8, 2024, at Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, Maryland.
