Kenneth L. Harriston passed away January 3, 2023, at his home in Gambrills. Kenneth, known by the nickname "Hooks" by his closest friends, was born in Washington, D.C. to the late William McKinley Harriston Sr. and Alma Nellie Harriston. He attended D.C. Public Schools and later studied urban planning at the University of the District of Columbia. For several years, he worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, mostly out of the Brightwood Station in Northwest D.C. After the USPS, Kenneth worked in federal civil rights enforcement in housing and was a union steward for AFSCME until he became supervisor of publications management at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Later, he worked in security at what was then called the Vista Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C., and was the chair of the O'Malley Senior Center Advisory Board in Odenton, Maryland. He was a member of the Prince Hall Free Masonry. For much of his adult life, Kenneth was an avid and highly skilled golfer who captured dozens of championships in competitions with the Postal Golf Club of Washington, D.C. Trophies, some as high as three feet tall, plaques, and other awards that came with his golfing prowess filled display shelves in his homes. He is survived by his wife, Sally Harriston; brother Harold H. Harriston Sr. (Lenora); six children with his first wife Alice Woods Harriston: Sharon Henery, Kenneth M. Harriston (Cora), Renee Moreno (Jose), Keith Harriston (Carol), Sheryl Tyner (Brian), and Lisa Birch (Chris). In addition, he is survived by daughter Regina Wells, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sheila Harriston Walton (Richard).
