On March 30, 2026, Kay Moffeit Stringfellow, 77, of Hanover, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a brave and courageous five-and-a-half-year battle with multiple myeloma.
Kay was born on January 10, 1949, in Jacksonville, Texas. She graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1966 and went on to earn Bachelor of Arts degrees in both French and History from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1970.
In December 1970, Kay married Joe Mack Clemens, and in April 1972 they welcomed their daughter, Emily Claire Clemens. The family moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in October 1973. There, Kay pursued her passion for art, taking classes at William Carey College in 1974 and teaching an Art for Education class in 1975. After her divorce in 1976, she began teaching art at Oak Grove High School, where she remained until 1980.
In June 1979, Kay met David Stringfellow, and they were married on August 9, 1980. From 1981 to 1983, she studied and worked at the University of Southern Mississippi, earning her Master’s degree in Educational Technology in 1983. She then taught gifted and talented students at Rawls Springs Elementary School from 1983 to 1987. In 1987, Kay and her family relocated to Hanover, Maryland, where she began a long and dedicated career as a civilian employee with the Department of Defense at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade. She served there until her retirement in 2011.
Kay was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she poured her love, wisdom, and kindness into both of them every single day. She cherished time spent traveling with family and friends and found great joy in painting, especially in watercolor. Her love of nature was reflected in her passion for gardening, and in 2010 she became a certified Master Gardener.
Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 32 years, David Stringfellow; her parents, Henry Emerson Moffeit and Lillian Elizabeth Hebert Moffeit; and her sister, Elizabeth Lillian “Liz” Rafay.
She is survived by her daughter, Emily Claire Clemens of Cambridgeshire, England; her granddaughter, Ashley Kay Clemens of Odenton, Maryland; her grandson, Casey Austin Clemens of Austin, Texas; her nephew, Wendel Emerson Skolaski (Debbie Acebo) of Houston, Texas; her sister-in-law, Joan “Ann” Mooney of Petal, Mississippi; her nephew, Stephen Douglas Mooney of Petal, Mississippi; her niece, Sarah Mooney Tracy (Trey) of Madison, Mississippi; her brother-in-law, Robert Logan Dirck of Great Bend, Kansas; her nephew, Robert L. Dirck Jr. (Kim) of Dyer, Indiana; as well as many beloved great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 7850 Parkside Blvd., Hanover, followed by a Mass of Christian Celebration at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Fr. Binoy A. Lucka.
Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
