Juanita Phillips

February 11, 1943 — June 7, 2023

Gambrills

On June 7, 2023, Juanita Beaton Phillips passed away while visiting family in North Carolina. She was 80.  Born in Philadelphia to Rosa Beaton, Juanita lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kansas, Germany, and finally Gambrills, Maryland for 44 years.  Devoted Mother of Elliott O. Phillips Jr. (Lillian) of North Carolina and Brian K. Phillips of California, and beloved Grandmother to Joshua, Corey and Rosa.  Juanita was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Elliott O. Phillips Sr (Phil).

Juanita was raised in Philadelphia surrounded by the many cousins, aunts and uncles of the Beaton Family.  She was adventurous, joining the military as part of the Women’s Auxiliary Corps (WAC).  As a WAC stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, she met and married a young soldier named Elliott O. Phillips.  She left the service after the birth of her first son, serving again years later in Maryland as a reservist.  Juanita worked as a punch card operator at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, served in various Department of the Army positions here and abroad, and got into computers as they were first coming into office use.  She worked for over 25 years until retirement as an information analyst for the National Telecommunications Information Agency (NTIA) under the Department of Commerce in Annapolis and Washington, DC.  Over the years Juanita also travelled to Austria, Italy, Rome, Holland, France, England, The Bahamas, South Korea, and Canada. After retiring Juanita stayed active socially through the Red Hat Society and her swimming group, the Aqua Babes; and in the community by serving along with Phil in the American Legion Post #141 in Annapolis, and through membership in the Continental Society Inc.
