Juanita (Helsel) Chapman (age 91) of Columbia, Maryland, passed away while in the hospital on December 31, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Samuel F. Chapman, who died in September 2022.
Juanita was born on January 18, 1931, in Princeton, West Virginia, where she lived until moving to Maryland for employment. She was the youngest (and last remaining) child born to the late Jacob A. Helsel, Jr. and Biddie A. (Kanode) Helsel.
Juanita worked as a switchboard operator at the National Security Agency (NSA) at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland for ten years. During her time at NSA, she met her future husband, Sam (of Crawfordville, Georgia). Juanita and Sam were united in holy matrimony on May 15, 1965. Juanita later became a full-time homemaker with the birth of their first child in 1968. She frequently said how blessed she was to have been able to stay at home to raise her children.
Juanita is survived by her two children, Linda Marie (Chapman) Boies and John Michael Chapman (Janet), of Glenelg, Maryland, and her cherished granddaughter, Sarah Marie (Boies) Mattoon (Aaron) of Laurel, Maryland. She also leaves behind many beloved one-, two-, and three-generation nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., concluding with a 1 p.m. funeral service held in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, Maryland.
