On June 23, 2026, Joseph William “Bill” Hill Sr. passed away peacefully at home at the age of 90.

Born in West Virginia, Bill proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. In 1971, he and his family made their home in the Crofton area, where he remained a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend for many years.

Bill earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the West Virginia University School of Music and later received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore Law School. He enjoyed a distinguished legal career as partner with the Lancaster, Bland, Eisele, Herring & Hill Law Firm and was a member of the American Bar Association.

A gifted musician, Bill's love of music remained a lifelong passion. He performed with numerous big bands and was especially talented on the woodwinds, including the saxophone, flute, and clarinet. Whether on stage or among friends, music brought him great joy throughout his life.

Bill also found happiness in the outdoors. He treasured fly-fishing adventures with his late son, Joseph W. “JW” Hill Jr., particularly their memorable fishing trips to Costa Rica. An avid reader, he enjoyed sharing favorite books with his daughter, Donna, and discussing them together. He was a loyal supporter of the Washington Redskins football team and enjoyed taking long walks.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Helene Hill (née Battle); his loving daughter, Donna M. Hill-Kassel and her husband, Ben; and his cherished granddaughter, Abigail Kassel.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph W. “JW” Hill Jr., and his brother, Richard Hill.

Bill will be remembered for his intellect, kindness, devotion to family, love of music, and the quiet strength and integrity that guided him throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
