James Gregory Walters, 85, died February 3, 2024, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born in Washington, D.C., and lived in Rockville, MD. He attended University of Maryland, graduated in 1960, and then enlisted in Army. Upon his discharge in 1966, he applied and was accepted at the National Security Agency until his retirement in 2000. Greg was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Odenton, where he ushered for over 30 years.
A resident of Four Seasons Estates for 52 years, he leaves behind his wife, Ruth, of 50 years; two children James G. Walters Jr. and Dr. Timothy (Jamie) Walters and three grandchildren, Samantha, Cooper, and Julia; a brother Ronald (Cris) and nephew Matthew. Burial will be private at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
Greg loved making and putting things together. Besides building cabinets in his garage (workplace) and laundry room, he made a cradle for his first born, a toy chest, and eventually a tree house on stilts with a sandbox beneath it. As the boys grew, a bicycle was always at their disposal. If a parent came to the garage wanted to have a bike fixed, with their permission, he'd disassemble the bike, soak the parts in kerosene, and reassemble it. Most parents were amazed and overjoyed, looking at an almost new bike again!
When Tim, his son, was selected to become the band's drum major in his senior year, Greg went to work constructing uniform racks so the students could easily get their uniform and hats at performance time. A drum major stand was needed so Greg built one as well.
Having been a cigar smoker all his life, Ruth thought he might have lived a long as George Burns, but God willed differently.
