Howard William McAdams

Howard "Mac" William McAdams, 82, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, in Annapolis, Maryland.

Born on May 12, 1944, in Willmar, Minnesota, Howard grew up with a deep appreciation for his roots and the history of his hometown. He spent his youth in Willmar before answering the call to serve his country, joining the United States Navy and serving four years of dedicated military duty.

Following his naval service, Howard moved to Maryland to begin what would become a distinguished lifetime career at the National Security Agency. Rising to the role of Supervisor, he brought dedication, leadership, and integrity to his work until his well-earned retirement in 1999.

Howard was, above all, a man of strong character and simple truths. He was steadfastly a man of his word—if he said he would do something, you could count on it. Always punctual, Howard believed that being on time was a sign of respect, a value he carried throughout his military, professional, and personal life. Yet for all his discipline, he had a deeply affectionate side and was always great for a big, welcoming hug that instantly made you feel cared for.

Outside of his career, Howard was a passionate lifelong learner with a profound love for history. He cherished the rich heritage of the Great Northern Railroad, where his father had retired, and found immense joy in learning the stories of the places and eras that came before. Travel was one of his greatest thrills; he was genuinely ecstatic every time he had the opportunity to explore somewhere new and immerse himself in its history.

Above all, Howard valued family. Nothing brought him more pure joy than his grandchildren, whom he absolutely adored. Being their grandfather was one of his proudest roles, and he cherished every single moment spent with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Isabel McAdams, and his younger brother, Harold McAdams.

Howard’s legacy lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his older sister, Marian McAdams Duthie; his two sons, Shane Lloyd and Michael McAdams; and his two cherished grandchildren, Beckham McAdams and Audrey McAdams, as well as extended family and friends who will miss his warmth and stories.

Howard will be laid to rest with military honors at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
