Helen Virginia Botts, born in West Virginia, and a long-term resident of Maryland, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on the evening of Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. She was 96 years old.
Helen’s love of almost all things sports meant that her favorite TV channels were MASN, Fox Sports, and ESPN, and she never let her subscription to Sports Illustrated lapse. There would be none of those silly sitcoms or dramas for Helen. Afternoons were filled with golf, basketball, bowling, baseball, and football, and her wealth of stats for players from college straight into the pros was remarkable. Even into her nineties, she could go toe-to-toe with any top-notch sports reporter!
Over 50 years of marriage, Helen and her late husband, Melvin, shared many wonderful experiences. From road trips, cruising, and flights to far off lands to bowling, concerts, dinner-theater, and sporting events it was always an adventure. Through it all though, Helen’s favorite activity was spending time with family. Until recent years, New Year’s Day, Easter, and Christmas Eve were always hosted by Helen and she never missed a gathering at another family member’s house. She filled many roles in her long beautiful life, but Mom, Wife, Sister, Aunt, “Uncle Helen”, Grandma, Great-Grandma, cousin, and friend are the titles that meant the most to a woman who lived a life full of love and compassion. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Helen is survived by three loving children, Glenna (Tom) Wolking, Robert Jenkins, and John Botts; son-in-law, Bill Biggs; six cherished grandchildren, Jeff Botts, Christina (Matt) Fritz, Brian (Shaki) Botts, Heather (Jimmy) Roe, Tom Wolking, Jr., Kimberly (Kenny) Burk; and seven great grandchildren, Cameron, Tenni, Sade, Catie, Sammi, Kenny, and Jackson.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Mel; her parents, Martha and Wayne Clark; brothers, Jimmy (Margie) Clark, and Chub (Bea) Clark; sister, Louise Wall; daughter, Diane Biggs; and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Botts.
The family will receive friends at the Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, MD 21113 on Saturday, July 26, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 pm. Interment will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen’s name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation at www.michaeljfox.org or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
