Golden Estella (Butler) Matthews

Golden Estella Matthews of Hanover, MD, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2015 at her residence, at the age of 84.  Golden was born on October 24, 1930 in Dorsey, MD to the late Howard and Blanche Butler.

She was an active member of the St. Mark United Methodist Church where she served as the first and only female Treasurer. She was involved in several other church activities including the Finance Committee,  the United Methodist Women, the Starlighter/Bertina Randall Choir, the Drama Club, and was a Sunday school teacher.

Golden worked diligently for more than 37 years at the Internal Revenue Service and  the Ft. George G. Meade Office of Finance. In her retirement, she raised her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.  Golden was affectionately known as Mom Mom to many.

She is survived by her son, Carlton R. Matthews and his wife, Nonie; daughter, Sheila J. Galloway; four grandchildren, Anthony West, Carlton B. Matthews, II, Tia Galloway and Kia Franklin; four great grandchildren, Mia Franklin, Isana Matthews, Zoelle Matthews and Elijah Lynch; two sisters, Geneva Harris and Patricia Caldwell; two brothers, Samuel Butler and Frank Butler and her goddaughter, Rhonda Caldwell-Dove.  Golden was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton B. Matthews.

The family will receive friends at Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, MD 21113 on Sunday, May 10, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  A funeral service will be held at Saint Mark United Methodist Church, 1440 Dorsey Road, Hanover, MD 21076 on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.  A wake will begin at 10:30 a.m.  Burial to follow at Saint's Rest Cemetery in Hanover, MD.
