On March 11, 2024, George Redfield Westerbeke of Laurel passed away at the age of 80. George was a very private person and enjoyed viewing the world from his own perspective. He was an only child and was accustomed to doing things his way. As he aged, he very much lived his own way from reading his hundreds of books that lined the walls of his apartment, to his many museum visits, to cooking and listening to classic music. He enjoyed traveling the world, immersing himself in the art and history of wherever he roamed. George was an oddity to some and he knew it, but to us he was funny, smart, kind and had a few one liner’s that he threw our way. Yes, he was a handful. As he grew older and became less able, he relied on the staff at Steward Manor, his home of 52 years. They all knew him, looked out for him, and cared about him. A unique man, he had a kind and generous heart. His friends, James and Fran, are thankful that George is at peace.
Born on Long Island, New York, George served his country as a member of the Unites States Army, stationed in both Texas and Korea. He later earned his Master of Legal Studies from SUNY. He worked as a law librarian from 1986 to 1999, and later as a paralegal for the United States Army Claims Services.
In lieu of flowers, donation in his name may be made to the National Federation of the Blind, Attn: Outreach, 200 East Wells Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21230. Thank you!
