Elsie Gyles Pettebone

Elsie Gyles Pettebone, a long time resident of Blackville, SC and formerly of Annapolis, MD passed away in the early morning of Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Tate Chesapeake Hospice House in Linthicum, MD, at the age of 86, due to bladder cancer and kidney failure. Elsie was born on September 16, 1924 in Siler City, North Carolina and was the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Ronald Corbin Gyles and Valeria (Still) Gyles.

Elsie was married to John Elliott Pettebone for 53 years, until his death in the late 1990's. Both Mr. and Mrs. Pettebone spent their life in Annapolis, MD as active members of College Avenue Baptist Church where Mrs. Pettebone became the youngest President of the Women's Missionary Union. After they moved to Blackville, SC in 1985 she became very active in the First Baptist Church of Blackville and in the Blackville Garden Club. Prior to her move to Blackville, Mrs. Pettebone spent 22 years in management at the Central Garage for the Anne Arundel County Government.

She is survived by her son, John E. Pettebone and his wife, Bonnie of Odenton MD and her daughter, Kathye Pettebone Long and her, husband Gene of Severna Park MD.

A visitation will be held at the Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, MD on Friday, January 14 from 7 until 8 pm.

A luncheon will be held prior to services at the First Baptist Church of Blackville, 19449 Solomon Blatt Avenue North, Blackville, SC 29817 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. The family will then receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. The burial will follow at Blackville Cemetery in Blackville, SC.
