Edward William Godfrey

October 9, 1929 — April 24, 2018

On April 24, 2018, Edward (Ed) William Godfrey, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 88.   Born in New York City to Edward and Della Godfrey, Ed was a 40-year resident of Bowie before moving to Odenton in 2005.  Ed proudly served his country as a member of both the United States Navy and the United States Air Force.  After his military service ended, Ed pursued a degree in Accounting and graduated from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.  Ed continued his government service working as a budget analyst for the Veterans Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration before retiring in 1985.

For over 50 years, Ed was an active member of the Christian Community Presbyterian Church where he served on the Finance Committee and Parish Life.  Ed was extremely proud of his volunteer work knowing that he changed countless lives. As a Red Cross blood donor, Ed donated over five gallons of blood.  As a long time American Cancer Society volunteer, Ed conducted countless smoking cessation clinics including several inside prisons. For over 17 years, Ed was the organizer of the Bowie Food Pantry.  Ed was presented the “Extraordinary Volunteer” Award for his involvement in the design and construction of the Bowie Senior Center.  Ed volunteered for numerous other causes and was always available to help anyone in need.  When not volunteering, Ed loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attending their numerous activities. Ed’s passion was travel having taken 21 cruises, stayed in 25 elder hostels and visited over 20 countries.  Ed was always seeking out new countries to visit and trips on which to embark.

Devoted husband of 62 years to Gloria Godfrey (nee Cardenas); beloved father of Edward S. Godfrey (Lucinda) of Annapolis MD, Glenn A. Godfrey (Susan) of Ashburn VA and Donna G. Nellis (Don) of Columbia MD; cherished grandfather of 10 and great-grandfather of 4.  He was predeceased by his sister Patricia Bolaris.
