Dorothy Virginia Small, 77, of Severn, Maryland, died on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Dorothy (commonly known as Virginia) passed away peacefully at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD. She was surrounded by her loving family. Virginia was born on October 28, 1936 in Cambridge, MD to Russell and Hennie Wing. She graduated from Mace's Lane High School in Cambridge, MD in 1954. Virginia married her husband Nelson Small in 1956.
As a military spouse in the U.S. Army for over 25 years, Virginia was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Army upon her husband's retirement for the support that she provided her husband during his years of service. She was stationed along with her husband in Kentucky, Illinois, California, Panama Canal Zone, Georgia and Maryland. Virginia was an active member in the NCO Wives Club while at various military posts. During her many years of travel, Virginia developed and maintained many life long friendships in addition to maintaining close ties to her many friends and family in Cambridge and Baltimore, Maryland. Following the military retirement of her husband in Maryland, she began to occupy her free time by working in the food service industry. Virginia went on to earn a certificate from the Maryland Training Center, Inc. in IBM-Keypunch Operations in 1983. She worked for a period of time at the Court of Appeals in Annapolis as a Data Entry Clerk. Following her job at the Court of Appeals, she worked as a product demonstrator.
Virginia was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker. She attended various churches in her community and also enjoyed spending time shopping and visiting friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother. She is survived by her sons, Lorenzo Small and Eugene Small; daughter, Jennifer Small; Grandson, Jeremy Small; Great-Grandson, Caleb Small; brother, James Wing, Sr.; Daughter-in-laws: Carolyn Small and Annie Small, Grand Daughter-in-law, Candace Small and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, MD 21113 immediately followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
