DIANNA SUSAN LANE SMITH
1963-2026
Dianna Susan Lane Smith departed peacefully on February 11, 2026 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. She was surrounded by Reginald L. Smith, her husband of 38 years, sisters Alison Himes and Karen Bell, and brother-in-law Stuart Himes. Dianna was 62 years old.
Dianna was born March 5, 1963 in Omaha, Nebraska, the youngest of four children of SMSgt. William L. (“Bill”) Lane, USAF Ret., and Hattie O. (nee Johnson) Lane, both of whom preceded her passing, as did her brother, Kenneth W. Lane. Dianna and her husband have resided in Crofton, Maryland for 33 years.
Dianna was a 1981 graduate of Friendly Senior High School in Fort Washington, Maryland. An excellent student, she excelled at math, which would serve her well in her career. She thereafter attended the University of Maryland before entering the mortgage banking business full time, where over the next 20-plus years she would establish herself as an industry legend, working for some of the nation’s largest mortgage banking firms. Dianna later worked in the convention and tradeshow services industry for 10 years.
Throughout her life, Dianna was sweet, kind, fun-loving, and smart, with an incomparable sense of humor. Hardly a day went by that she and her husband were not doubled over with laughter. The couple was inseparable, and they enjoyed many activities together, including ballgames, ballroom dancing, fine dining, live concerts, and raising their Basset Hounds. She was a skilled seamstress who made her own wedding dress, and an accomplished cook who loved to experiment with new recipes.
Dianna was adored by her family and will be remembered for her beauty, grace, fierce devotion to her husband, and above all, her courage.
In addition to Reginald, Alison, Karen, and Stuart, Dianna is survived by her uncle Joseph Johnson, Jr., aunt Rosalene Krygar, brother-in-law Ronald G. Smith, sister-in-law Katharine Smith, nine nieces and nephews, seven grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and many cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to your favorite charitable organization.
