David Steven Berman passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026 at the age of 78. Born on February 28, 1947, in Washington, DC, David’s exuberance and warmth left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered throughout his life.
From his early years in the Maryland suburbs of DC, it was clear that David had a unique spark. He was outgoing and possessed an innate ability to connect with people, forging friendships that would last a lifetime. His home was a lively one, often filled with the gentle chaos of cats who seemed to take their roles as supervisors very seriously, watching over their beloved human with both curiosity and companionship.
David embarked on a transformative journey when he joined the U.S. Navy in 1965. Assigned to the 1st Marine Division during the Vietnam War, he showcased remarkable courage, earning an array of honors including two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal. His dedication and bravery during a challenging time exemplified the spirit of resilience that defined his life.
Following his service, David’s impressive career took him from the military to the firefighting ranks in Washington, D.C., where he served as a firefighter. Creative and adventurous, he found himself traveling the country as a crew member for various musical acts, adding to a narrative rich in vibrancy and stories. His journey further led him to CNN as a broadcasting technician, he excelled and earned multiple awards for his contributions. Among these acclaim, he was particularly proud of receiving the Peabody Award for his exceptional work in documentary lighting.
A passionate hot rod enthusiast, David's love for cars was evident in his collection, with his most prized possession being a meticulously restored 1932 Ford Roadster. This passion for classic cars was paralleled by his interest in military history; he had a particular fascination with military miniatures and dioramas, reflecting a deep respect for his service and a love for storytelling through his collections.
Throughout his life, David was known for his infectious laugh and the heartwarming tales he shared about his numerous adventures. Friends and family often found themselves in stitches, captivated by his talent for storytelling. He had the rare gift of making those around him feel loved, important, and entertained.
David is lovingly remembered by his brother Martin Berman and his wife, Darlene; and by his long-term girlfriend, Janet Cowley. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who admired him deeply. He was preceded in death by his brother Avron Berman, sister-in-law Mildred Berman, and sisters Audrey Kabron and Faith Hall.
Although David has departed from this world, his spirit, laughter, and tales will perpetually resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Their memories live on through the legacy of love and joy that David brought into our lives.
Graveside services and interment will take place on Tuesday, February 10th, at 10:00am at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 Central Avenue W, Davidsonville, Maryland, 21035.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 15th, starting at 12pm, at the American Legion Post 60, 2 Main Street, Laurel, Maryland, 20707.
