David M. Barnes

March 1, 1943 — August 16, 2014

David Milton Barnes, of Severna Park, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, passed away from natural causes at the age of 71 years on Saturday morning aboard his power boat home at the Magothy Marina on the Magothy River. He was born on March 1, 1943 in Buffalo, New York, the 2nd son of Malcolm Harold Barnes and Kathryn Elkins (Longmire) Barnes. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Nancy Kathryn Barnes, and by his parents, most recent death being that of his mother on September 4, 2009.

David was married and divorced three times, the first to Susan Lavinia Manna on June 10, 1967 in Scarborough-on-Hudson, New York, with whom he had his first child, being Deborah Michelle Barnes, now Mrs. Patrick Mattie of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He married second Elizabeth Innis on December 17, 1972 in Houston, Texas, with whom he had his second child, being David Michael Barnes of Houston. David married third Carol Ellen Harris on November 10, 1990 in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Surviving him are his brother, Roger Elkins Barnes of San Diego, CA and his son, Garrett Alan Barnes of Salt Lake City, UT; his sister, Kathleen Alice (Barnes) (Frentz) Hardin of Bella Vista, AR and her son, Mark Andrew Frentz of Bentonville, AR; his daughter, Deborah and her sons, Robert-Cole Barnes and Jack Conaty Mattie; his son, David and his son, Tanner James Barnes of Houston; plus numerous cousins.

David was raised and schooled in Kenmore, NY, Indianapolis, IN, and Tarrytown, NY. After high school graduation, he matriculated at Canaan College in Canaan, NH and Louisiana College in Pineville, LA (living in Alexandria, LA, with his recently widowed grandmother). However, on February 21, 1962 at Shreveport, LA, David enlisted as a Private (E-1) in the United States Army, and received training in Fort Devens, MA between May 23, 1962 and December 20, 1962 as a Teletype Operator. On February 2, 1965 at Fort Hamilton, New York City, NY, David was transferred to Army Reserves overseas (apparently to Harrogate, England) for a period of three years until his discharge on February 20, 1968, with his last duty assignment in the 183rd USASA OPNS Co. (A) 318th Battalion USASA as a SP5 (E5) (T). David was decorated as a Sharpshooter (Rifle M-1), though was especially excited about his first parachute jump.

Back in the States, David worked for the National Security Agency (NSA) for over twenty years, performing activity that he carefully held close, as with other private matters in his life. He lived aboard his power boat named INSANITY at the Magothy Marina for several decades, taking time on occasion to travel the open road on his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, once completely around the country. He enjoyed visiting people and places of interest or remembrance, such as prior family homes and neighborhoods, and most recently The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

Over the years, he was fond of, and beloved by, many good friends in many places, including those at the Marina. David was ever alert to and well acquainted with world affairs, finance, societal trends, humankind, persons, and relations, and about which he could fervently talk with candor. He was diligent in telephoning his mother once a week, a special delight to her in her latter years, and more recently communication oft with his brother. Despite his modest albeit tardy initiatives prior, the severe deterioration and rapid decline of his health eventually prevented his stated intents to visit and enhance his rapport with his children and grandchildren.

With military honors ashore his beloved Magothy River, David will be memorialized at a barbeque for a hundred or so friends at Magothy Marina on Saturday afternoon, August 23, 2014. Rest in peace, our brother, now released from debilitating mortal ills. (Knowledgeably prepared by Roger Elkins Barnes with modest contributions, and submitted on August 20, 2014.)
