On the morning of December 19, 2022, Bhupendra P. Shah passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 88.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Devyani B. Shah, his sons , Nayan and Shailan, their respective spouses Ken and Alpa; two grandchildren Nikhil and Sarina, his sisters Mahendra and Bhavna and a large and loving extended family in the United States, India and Australia.
Born in Baroda, India in 1934, B.P. Shah came to the United States in 1958 for graduate studies at Syracuse University. A year later his fiance Devyani joined him and they were married in Syracuse. In 1961 they moved to Washington D.C. and settled in Silver Spring, Maryland.
As a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, he taught at Catholic University and eventually the University of District of Columbia, teaching thousands of students until his retirement in 2004.
He was well-known as a visionary and dedicated leader advancing the Indian community and Hindu spirituality in the Washington metropolitan area. B.P. Shah led India House of Worship for forty years and edited the Samskar newsletter for 30 years. He organized religious programs, bhajans and festivals, inviting leading Hindu and Jain teachers and musicians to support the growth of the spiritual community. B.P. Shah also organized the 1984 National Convention of the National Federation of Indian Associations; the Association of Baroda University Alumni in North America and the 2006 World Gujarati Conference. In all these endeavors, especially his leadership of India House of Worship, Bhupendra Shah lived the spirit of seva and dharma and has profoundly created a spiritual home for many in this place we now call home.
