Bhagwanti Daby Lakshman Akalu

Bhagwanti Daby Lakshman Akalu was born on November 21st, 1927.  She was the only child to her parents Lakshman and Sukdaiya. Raised in Guyana, South America, she graduated from St. Peter’s School. She was a devoted role model to her children, the Community and Triumph Village Arya Samaj Mandir. In addition to Guyana creole language, she spoke, read and wrote Hindi. She was graciously stern when it came to making sure her kids engage in the Vedic tradition. She loved singing, and even played the Dolak. As a mother, she worked incredibly hard by selling fresh produce from her own farm. She migrated to the US in 1988.  She lived in Maryland, then moved to New York to live with her daughter for several years. Then came back to Maryland, where she lived her last years.

She was a loving mother to nine children, Shanti Sarawan, Spouse Sam Sarawan, Vishnu Ramphal, Spouse Urcella Ramphal, Ashwanti Ramphal, Sandra Ramphal-Herman, Spouse Steve Herman, Sharmila Gray, Spouse Craig Gray, Sue Colbert, Subaschandra Ramphal, Spouse Marie Ramphal, Karamchandra Ramphal, and Sawyak Shashri Ramphal.

While she was the direct Caregiver for some of her Grandchildren, she embraced all 20 of them.  Mandy, Bobby, Rupa, Harrychand, Rishi, Shelly Simone, Sascha, Sean, Rohini, Mohindra, Tasha, Samantha, Anil, Shane, Sachin, Miranda, Firi, Saski, and Vasthi.

She was blessed with 21 Great Grandchildren, and 4 Great, Great Grandchildren.

Her late husband was Harry Ramphal Akalu.
