Albert Raymond Sushko, LTC, USA, Retired of Odenton, MD passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017 at his residence, at the age of 99. Albert was born on November 1, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Edward Frank Sushko and Helen (Chabator) Sushko.
LTC Sushko enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and then enlisted in the Army in 1937. LTC Sushko went overseas with First Army as a Chief Warrant Officer and participated in the invasion of Normandy. LTC Sushko received a battle field commission as a First Lieutenant in France. LTC Sushko participated in the Battle of the Bulge. While serving with the 12 th Army Group, he was sent behind enemy lines to help restore Radio Luxemburg, which had been destroyed by the retreating German troops. LTC Sushko received the Bronze Star for this action. LTC Sushko also received the equivalent of Bronze Star from the government of Luxemburg. LTC Sushko had numerous overseas assignments to include England, Germany, Japan, and Greenland. LTC Sushko retired in February 1968 with 30 years of active military service.
After retiring from the Army, Albert worked at the National Security Agency for 12 years in the Policy and Planning directorate.
In his retirement, Albert served 25 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He stood radio watch at Coast Guard Station Annapolis for 15 years. He was a favorite at the station for bringing in dozens of chocolate chip cookies every week that he and his wife had baked to share with the Station. Albert was quite possibly the oldest active member of the USCG Auxiliary when he finally retired at the age of 90. He enjoyed spending time sailing the Chesapeake Bay and the Caribbean.
Albert is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Marion (Frick) Sushko; three daughters, Anita Pahl and her husband, James, Carol Collier and her husband, William and Leigh-Ann Rinehart and her husband, Dirk; two sons, Eugene Sushko and his wife, Linda and Edward Sushko and his wife, Lucy; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Albert was known as Pop Pop to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom saw him on a daily basis.
