Timothy Francis Mccormack

April 11, 1958 — June 2, 2024

Timothy Francis McCormack, age 66, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Elkridge, Maryland on the evening of Sunday, June 02, 2024 due to cardiac arrest.

Tim was born on April 11, 1958 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Thomas E. McCormack and Florence Brown. “Timmy” celebrated his three-month milestone by turning over for the first time, then sitting up on October 1st and for an encore ten days later, standing up. He crowned his first tooth on New Year’s Day of 1959 and quickly followed up such achievements by attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in Grand Rapids. He attended Central Michigan University (1979) and then went on to study law at University of Michigan (1983). After graduating, Tim moved to Maryland.

He enjoyed a full schedule of hobbies, and he was as passionate about them as he was his work at Ballard Spahr in Baltimore. Tim was the recipient multiple times of the firm’s most prestigious pro bono awards: the Alan J. Davis Award for exemplary legal representation in a matter involving the public good and the Leonard E. Lindquist Award, which honors pro bono support for low-income individuals.

His years of interactions with people who were in the most dire need of an advocate led Tim to help found Free Where You Are–Prison Mindfulness Community where he taught mindfulness and meditation in Maryland prisons. He also was a member of the Yoga Center of Columbia and the New Dawn Sangha. While on a trip to the Middle East with Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center in 2016, Tim met Walaa Abumonshar. They married in a private ceremony in June 2021.

He was looking forward to retirement and joked about having his oldest grandson drive him around town. Tim loved being a grandpa to his five grandsons: Lucien, Auberon, and Remiel Soong-McCormack & Felix and Oliver McCabe-Marcell. Tim and former spouse, Lorraine Ilah (Leeser) had three children, Daniel K. McCormack (Yee-Ning Soong), Megan E. McCabe-Marcell (Seth McCabe-Marcell), and Andrew J. McCormack. Tim is also survived by his wife Walaa Abumonshar and step-daughter Judi Bali of Palestine and his siblings, Elaine McCormack and Thomas A. McCormack of Grand Haven, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Molly A. Maczka.

His funeral will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. in Odenton, MD, on Monday, June 24, 2024 with a viewing from 10:00-11:00 and service from 11:00-12:00. He wished to be cremated which will be done privately after the service.
