Heaven’s garden gained its most beautiful flower with the passing of Kathleen A. Buinickas on 5 September 2024. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, the love of her life, Michael. They shared a once in a lifetime love. Kathy was born on September 21, 1953 to Alvin and Beatrice Mello at the US Navy Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island. Their family grew to include her siblings Ken (Jan), Steve, Jim (Diane), Bruce, Pat (Mike), and Janet (Robert). She was a loving mom to her children, Christy (Clay) and Alex (Dana) and a cherished Mom-Mom to her grandchildren Ian, Madelyn, and Layla. She was loved by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Her grandchildren all share special memories with their Mom-Mom. She taught Madey how to knit. She was Layla’s school bus buddy, and they loved sharing emoji’s. And Ian will surely miss his “Number 1” and ultimate favorite person.
Personally, and professionally, her life’s work was about her community. Prior to retirement, she served as a Legislative Assistant to the Anne Arundel County Council and even earned an Executive Citation for her outstanding commitment to public service. She devoted her life to others through volunteer work, including Meals on Wheel, Farihaven Retirement Community, Kiwanis Club, Elks Club, and Girl Scout Troops.
She spoke life and truth to others with boldness and ease. She comforted people, gave generously, demonstrated genuine acceptance, provided gentle wisdom, and showed unconditional love. She was like a second parent to her children’s friends, many who lovingly called her “Mom” and she also sponsored foreign exchange students from Germany, France, and Spain.
Outside of spending time with her family and many friends, she enjoyed traveling – especially spending time at the beach. She had an adventurous spirit that led her to one of her favorite memories – skydiving. She also was an avid reader and there wasn’t a puzzle she couldn’t put together. Her family and friends will miss a cherished piece of their puzzle.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD, specifically, the LifeBridge Health Cardiovascular Institute.
