Sylvia “Jean” Souder, a resident of Gambrills, MD, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the Rebecca Fortney Inpatient Care Center, Pasadena, MD. She was 74. Jean was born on June 28, 1943 in Washington, DC, and was the daughter of the late Archie “Mack” McCullen and Effie Boone Denton.
Jean began her career as a crossing guard for the P.G. County Police Department. After 6 years, she was sworn in as a police officer of the 2nd District in Washington, DC where she stayed until her retirement. Shortly after retiring, she and her husband opened 2 pet stores called The Flying Squirrel which they ran until shortly after the death of her husband. She followed this by becoming a police officer with the National Zoo in Washington, DC. After several years, she entered full-time retirement.
Jean is survived by her loving daughter, Belinda Kilner and her husband John of Aberdeen, MD, granddaughters Kellye Kilner and Morgan Downs, and beloved great-granddaughter Anabel. She is preceded in death by her husband, Larry Souder and by her son, Kevin Souder. She is also survived by sisters Karen Lucas and Sharon Dodge.
