Harry Joseph Moore, 92 years young, originally of Philadelphia, PA, passed away the morning of May 22, 2017. He was surrounded by his family and went peacefully in his sleep.
Education was important to him and after attending Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia, he went on to study Forestry at Mount Alto College in Pennsylvania and graduated from Penn State University. He enlisted in the United States Navy to become a Naval Aviator, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He trained on many different aircraft including the Hellcat, the Avenger, several of the Navy's earliest jet-powered aircraft and the Corsair (his favorite).
Residing in College Park, Md for 44 years, after retiring from his work at the USDA, he became very involved in local politics, serving the City of College Park in several capacities. He also served in the Field of Firsts Foundation and helped preserve operations at the College Park Airport and was instrumental in developing the College Park Aviation Museum (now part of the Smithsonian). His last years were spent living in Odenton, Md. where he continued his community involvement.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sally, his son Daniel of Julian, PA, his daughter Patricia Moore Jonas of Hanover, Md, his son Michael of Hanover, Md. and his sisters Ruth Harold and Dorothy Rooney, both of Philadelphia, PA. His death was preceded by his sister Mary Powers.
