Sonja Thomason Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Sonja Ann Thomason, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, on August 7, 2022. She left us peacefully at her home in Hanover, MD. She was in her 84th year.

Sonja Ann Thomason, born Sonja Ann Breuer on March 20, 1938, in Eygelshoven, Netherlands spent most of her younger years in Germany with her mother and father, Elizabeth Rössler and Joahann Breuer. She met her first husband, James William McCormick, in 1954 while he was stationed with the military in Erlangen, Germany, and married him on May 7, 1955 before immigrating to the United States in 1956. Sonja remarried on February 1, 1980, to James Irving Thomason, who was retired military and also worked for the U.S. government as a civilian. After marrying, the two moved to England, where they lived for the next several years before returning to the United States making their home in Hanover, Maryland.

Sonja had a close relationship to God and was a WWII survivor. She enjoyed reading about history and often finished a book in a week. She enjoyed watching old classic movies and loved to bake. She would make delicious bundt marble cakes by the dozen and gift them to teachers, neighbors, coworkers, and friends.

She was a loving and caring person that would wait up every night to feed the stray cats, ducks, possums, and raccoons that would come to her door. How comforting is it to know that now she has made it home to her savior and she too shall be provided for. Her memory will be our greatest gift.

Sonja is survived by her husband, James Irving Thomason, and her four children James William McCormick II, Arch Gravely McCormick, Ruth Elizabeth McCormick, and Shirley Anne McCormick, as well as multiple grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her three precious cats.
