Maria Elena Berrios

Maria Elena Berrios, a resident of Severn, MD, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2020 at her home. She was 77 years old. Maria was born on July 3, 1942 in Humacao, Puerto Rico and was the daughter of the late Julio Figueroa and Sara Romero.

After spending a short time in New York City, Maria married Saturnino Berrios-Lopez in Puerto Rico in 1961. He was a US Army Soldier. While stationed in Fort Hamilton, New York, she gave birth to Alfredo in 1962 and Henry in 1963. Angel Luis was born in Germany in 1964.

In Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Saturnino was deployed to Vietnam from 1967-1968. Maria took care of her three sons solo during this time. After Saturnino returned from Vietnam, he was ordered back to Vietnam in 1970-1971 when at this time Maria and the boys lived in Puerto Rico. After returning from Vietnam, the family moved to Fort Meade, Maryland in 1972. Saturnino retired from the US Army in 1977.

The family moved to Puerto Rico in 1977 and then to New Jersey in 1978. They returned to Maryland in 1979 when Maria became a born again Christian, accepting Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. After seeing the beautiful change in her life, her husband and three sons gave their lives to Christ, also.

Maria was a member at Bethel Assembly of God in Savage, Maryland since 1980. From 1979 to 2004, she worked as an assembler at Nevemar in Odenton, Maryland.

Maria is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Saturnino Berrios-Lopez; three loving sons and their families, Alfredo and wife, Michelle; Henry and Angel Luis and wife, Carmen. Her grandchildren are Vincent, Angelina, Michael, Daniel, Samuel, Breeanna and Victor. Maria is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.
