James T. Hill Jr., age 81 of Millersville, passed due to complications due to multiple myeloma. The son of Agnes E. Hill, a homemaker and cafeteria worker, and James T. Hill Sr., a welder. James was born in South Baltimore and raised in the West Port section of Baltimore City. After graduation from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, he went to work at Westinghouse at Friendship Airport as a draftsman. While at Westinghouse, he enlisted in the Maryland Air National Guard at Martins Airport where he served in the communication division for seven years, obtaining a rank of Staff Sargeant. After leaving Westinghouse, he worked at Calvert Distillery as an operating engineer. While at Calvert, he attended and obtained an accounting degree from the University of Baltimore. Upon graduating from the University of Baltimore, he went to work at the University of Maryland Baltimore, while there he earned a master’s degree in MPA from University of Baltimore. He worked in the budget office for a number of years and advanced through management rank obtaining the position of Vice President for Administration and Finance, a position he held for the last half of his career until he retired on January 1, 2009. While at the University of Maryland Baltimore, he chaired the 1989 campus facilities master plan as one of his major achievements. He was an active member of the Masonic Fraternity. He was a past master of Jephthah Lodge #222, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite mason. As a graduate of the University of Baltimore, he was active in alumni affairs. He served on the Deans Council for the College of Liberal Arts for a number of years. When the College of Public Affairs broke out from the College of Liberal Arts, he became it’s first Chairman of the Deans Advisory Council and served on the council for a number of years until he retired for health issues.
He is survived by his wife Harriet of 53 years; his son Jeremy (spouse Mallory), and his four grandsons Isaac, Benjamin, Elliott, and Dorin; his sisters Rusty Elliott (spouse Robert) and Kathleen Slack (spouse Robert); his brothers Michael Hill (spouse Patricia), Raymond Hill (spouse Lisa), Patrick Hill, and Shawn Hill (spouse Michelle). He is also survived by 40 nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. on Monday, April 1, 2024, from 2:00 pm ~ 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm ~8:00 with a Masonic Service starting at 6:30 pm. A Mass of a Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Fields Roman Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Avenue S. Millersville, MD 21108. Interment to follow Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.
