Hatsuko Walko, beloved wife of Daniel Walko, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2015, at the age of 80.
A native of Okinawa, Japan, Hatsuko and her family resettled on the island of Tinian in Micronesia where they miraculously survived the battle there in WWII. The family was interned in a camp just a few miles from the airfield where the famed B-29 bomber, the ENOLA GAY, launched to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. After the war, the Shiroma family was repatriated to Okinawa.
Hatsuko married Daniel in 1973 while he was in the Air Force on duty in Okinawa.
In her earlier years in America, Hatsuko was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening. In later Years she very much enjoyed playing bingo where she made many warm and loving friends. She was an original member of the Okinawa Kai Association of Washington, D.C.
Hatsuko is survived by her husband, a brother in Japan, her daughter Misae, two grandchildren, and a great-grandson, Rayne.
A memorial gathering of friends and relatives will be held on Sunday, July 26, 2015 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. 1411 Annapolis Road Odenton, MD.
