Harsha was the best educator I had in all of my schooling. He took the time to converse with anyone about anything and always put himself last inside of the classroom and out. Hearing of his passing was devastating and I know I'm not the only one who will miss him. He was a great man, a great educator, and an even greater friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Oh, I was so taken back hearing this very sad news. I worked for Harsh in the Center for Closely Held Firms when it was relocated to the Timonium Campus in the late 90's. I enjoyed working with Harsh; he was always very pleasant and kind and I learned a lot. He was a good man and very proud of his family! I will surely miss him. My heart goes out to his wife, son and daughter at this very difficult time. Love, Jeannie

Harsh was pure joy, energy, and sparkling wit. He was also an example of humility, exactness, and deep commitment to social justice. Traveling with him in his beloved India, I strained to keep up with his seemingly boundless energy while quietly absorbing many cultural insights....the experience is one of my treasured gifts. My condolences to his family - and a salute to his amazing spirit that will continue to abide in so many lives.....

My organization and I had the great fortune of working with Dr. Desai in the spring semester of last year (2014). Through alumnus of the program, Dr. Desai took on one of our service areas (LOCATE: Child Care) as a project for the MBE graduate students. I found Dr. Desai to be thoughtful, caring, and very generous with his time and his expertise. We will greatly miss Dr. Desai.

It is with sadness that I read of Harsha's passing. I had the pleasure of working with both he and his wife Catherine. Harsha was a memorable part of my Loyola MBA education. I knew him to be smart, pleasant, insightful and with endless energy. Catherine is equally devoted to her career of caring and giving. They shared a common goal to do good for and with their fellow persons. I am currently out of the country and will not be able to join in his memory personally but I will think of him fondly. Sweet memories to his family. JAU

Harsha's capstone course in the Executive Program with Bob Margenthaler is what graduates remember most.

He had a unique gift...he knew he was the smartest guy in the room, you knew he was the smartest guy in the room...and yet he was unpretentious and humble about it.

When you spoke, he listened...actively...and when he responded, something in the response told you "he got it," while simultaneously offering something else you had not considered that created a new neural pathway for you.

He was a treasure, and I'm so sorry to hear he's gone.
Message from Catriona Hanley
January 15, 2015 5:00 PM

I'm so sorry to hear about Harsha's death. He was the one person in the Sellinger school with whom I had fairly regular philosophical chats, dating from when he was a willing respondent to a talk I did in the Loyola Newman Lecture Series in 2001. My talk was a critique of the growing corporatization of the University, and Harsha was surprisingly very open to the topic; his response was both witty and scholarly. We became intellectual friends after that.

Harsha participated in the Peace and Justice Studies Reading Group that I've headed up, and it was always great to have him there. I remember him, when we did a reading from Gandhi, regaling us with the story of his grandmother meeting the man himself! I regret that last semester his teaching schedule conflicted with our meeting times: he was disappointed not to be able to make it.

Harsha was a lovely man, so friendly, so broad in his outlook, and with such an open and cheerful countenance. Last I spoke to him via email, he told me that he was having a bit of surgery in December, and would miss a few weeks of the semester, but didn't want to miss the whole thing. He expected to be back and joining the Peace and Justice group sometime in February. "I don't know what my department will do with me", he wrote in that email. Now I know they are all wondering what to do without him. We'll miss him. But what a wonderful legacy he left, struggling for a better, more peaceful and more just world.

My deep condolences to the family.

With over 32 years of Harsha being my colleague, I have observed his students learning on many dimensions. I have also learned as colleague to value his insights, the poise with which he conducted himself, appreciation for his skills with dealing with difficult situations, and his style of conducting a class. As a colleague for these many years, I have learned from him as a co-author, committee member, a co-teacher in our international classroom, and most of all as a friend. Harsha, between the chief and the Indian I wish your spirit well and shall remember as your students do that " Culture beats strategy all of the time." I will miss you deeply!

Harsha genuinely cared for and valued each and every student he taught. His warmth, passion, energy and positive outlook were magnetic and I treasure moments and conversations with him at Loyola and after graduation. Harsha taught me to believe in my ideas and to quiet the inner "can't do" voice with a "Why not?" that inspires my work every day. He filled the buckets of everyone he met and will be greatly missed. I was very saddened to hear of the loss of Harsha. He was one of the first faculty members I met outside of those in my department when I started working at Loyola and I recall how genuinely welcoming he was. Over the years of working with him, I was always impressed with his passion for life-long learning and his knowledge of topics beyond the academic business areas. Harsha’s insights and his commitment to the continuous improvement of the educational experience of students positively impacted Loyola’s business programs in numerous ways. He will be missed by the many people who were fortunate enough to have known him.

This year I scheduled my trip to Baltimore, USA to visit Loyola University, and one of my main motivations was to meet Harsha again. He was my teacher and mentor, but above all he was a great friend with whom we share great and unforgettable moments.
Harsha loved good conversation even if it was accompanied by a good wine. I had the pleasure of receiving it and host it on my home a couple of times on their trips to Chile. We allways discussed because many former Chilean students wanted to be and share with him and days did little to meet everyone. What beautiful memories!
My deepest condolences to all the Desai family. I wish to greet them in other circumstances.

Harsha had the knack of asking the right questions and/or recommending the right resource to help you find the answers on your own. He touched my life for over 25 years and I watched him do the same to others leaving us all better, more at peace, and a little wiser. I will miss his intelligence and his kindness. I feel his loss.

I am deeply saddened by the news. Harsha was my teacher at Loyola, my mentor and most importantly a friend and father figure .

As a mentor he impacted my life by generously imparting his experiential knowledge and precious insights. I enjoyed the the long conversations over lunches with him and grateful for his ability to nurture even the silliest of the ideas. The Entrepreneur's Action Lab (TEAL) a students initiative to help local entrepreneurial community has been a culmination of many such long conversations and brainstorming sessions with Dr. Desai. His legacy of nurturing ideas, generosity in imparting knowledge and importance of being life long learner will be valued, remembered and missed.

I extend my deepest condolences to Desai family .

Harsha touched my mind and spirit from the first day our cohort started at Loyola and continued well after graduation. Today, I know that his wisdom, thoughts, and practical nature continue to positively contribute to how I approach my work everyday--it is so often about asking the right question versus trying to come up with right answer.

And, I know (we all know) that he made profound impacts like he did on me to so many other people--all over the world. That is quite an accomplishment, legacy, and an affirmation that Harsha is still with all of us.

I still am in shock and deeply saddened by the passing of Harsha. He was such a vibrant person that I just can't believe it. I will always be grateful for the kindness he showed me at Loyola and treasure the wonderful conversations about business, entrepreneurship, leadership, books - and life when he would stop by my office and say hello. I remember once he told me that he always learns something new in each class he teaches. and there's always one student in the room that knows more than he does. He had this wonderful (and uncommon) combination having such a sharp intellect, a deep passion for continuous learning, while being down-to-earth, relatable, and approachable.

Another memory - I remember him chatting with prospective students at information sessions. He cared so much about their well-being and future that he would ask current students and alumni to name 3 things they DIDN'T like about the program as well as what they liked. I loved it! It was so refreshingly honest and authentic. He always put the best interest of the student (or prospective student) at heart and they would want to attend the school even more because they knew he cared about them as individuals as well as students. Prospective students would also visit his class, which completely sold them on the program. They would come back and say how much they enjoyed it and how they valued that Harsha involved them in the class discussions. He took the time for others and made people feel valued and appreciated. He kept in touch long after I left Loyola checking in to say hello, ask what's new and even to discuss current reads. He mentioned some time ago that he was taking MOOCs to learn new things. How cool is that?!? My biggest regret is not being able to say good-bye and have another lunch or conversation together. Harsha showed everyone what is truly important in life and I will carry his lessons forward while missing him dearly and cherishing our friendship.
